Zverev Seals Laver Cup Glory For Europe After French Open And US Open Triumphs

Alexander Zverev added another major achievement to his remarkable 2026 season on Sunday, clinching the decisive victory that handed Team Europe the Laver Cup title with a commanding 13-5 win over Team World.

Zverev defeated Learner Tien 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the final singles match to secure the points Europe needed and complete a memorable campaign. The victory comes after the German enjoyed the biggest Grand Slam season of his career, winning his first French Open and US Open titles.

The Laver Cup triumph also provided a strong response from Zverev after his nine-match winning streak in singles came to an end on Saturday, when he lost to Australia's Alex de Minaur.

Tien, ranked 13th in the world, had made an impressive Laver Cup debut a day earlier by defeating Flavio Cobolli. But Zverev proved too strong when Europe needed to close out the contest.

Earlier on Sunday, Cobolli and Jakub Mensik had strengthened Europe's advantage with a 7-5, 6-3 doubles victory over de Minaur and Taylor Fritz. That left Zverev with the opportunity to finish the job, and he did so without allowing Team World a way back into the contest.

Europe's victory was sealed with three matches still remaining, meaning Carlos Alcaraz did not have to take the court against de Minaur in the scheduled third match of the day.

Alcaraz had already contributed to Europe's campaign, winning a doubles match alongside Mensik on Friday before beating Fritz in singles on Saturday.

The result marked another significant chapter in the Laver Cup's short history. Team World had won the previous edition in San Francisco, but Europe has now claimed six of the tournament's nine editions.

The competition follows a points-based format, with victories worth one point on Friday, two on Saturday and three on Sunday. The first team to reach 13 points is crowned champion.

For Zverev, the decisive win completed a season in which Grand Slam breakthrough and team success have come together in spectacular fashion.
