Zubeen Garg case chargesheet to be filed in 3 months: Himanta

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday assured that the chargesheet in the investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s death will be submitted within the stipulated three-month period. “The Assam government will definitely ensure justice to him,” he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of a programme in Dibrugarh, Sarma said the inquiry is progressing as expected, with several arrests already made. “All the accused will be presented in court, and we will not take more time than necessary so that the court can deliver justice promptly,” he added.

The Chief Minister highlighted that some members of the Assam Association in Singapore, who were with Zubeen during his final moments, have yet to return, except for one. “We are arranging for their return. Patience is essential, rushing the process could compromise justice,” he noted.

On international cooperation, Sarma explained that Assam Police cannot directly conduct investigations in Singapore, just as foreign authorities cannot operate here. “We are confident the Singapore Police will assist us. We mainly need video footage from the hotel and the yacht where he stayed, along with statements from the two individuals who operated it,” he said.

The CM added that he plans to meet the Singapore ambassador to India later this month and expects full cooperation. “The Singaporean authorities have already shared the forensic report, so submitting the chargesheet should not be difficult,” he said.

Sarma urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed methodically. “We are emotional, but emotions must not interfere with police work. A hasty approach could weaken the case and invite criticism,” he said.

Five individuals, including Zubeen’s cousin Sandipan Garg, manager Siddhartha Sharma, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta, and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, have been arrested and are currently in police custody.
