Zomato brings food straight to trains
Travellers booking train tickets on the MakeMyTrip app can now order food from over 40,000 restaurants listed on Zomato at more than 130 railway stations, the NASDAQ-listed travel tech company announced on Wednesday.
The initiative, titled ‘Food on Train’, is designed to enhance the travel experience by offering passengers a wider choice of meals directly delivered to their seats. This move comes at a time when demand for railway e-catering is growing significantly. In FY 2024–25, more than 90,000 rail passengers used Indian Railways’ e-catering services daily, marking a 66 per cent year-on-year growth.
According to the company, the service will cover breakfast, lunch, dinner, and quick snacks, supported by MakeMyTrip’s proprietary ‘Live Train Status’ tool, which enables timely food delivery aligned with train schedules.
Raj Rishi Singh, Chief Business Officer (Flights, GCC, Corporate Travel) and Chief Marketing Officer of MakeMyTrip, said the launch of the marketplace strengthens the company’s goal of providing convenience and choice to travellers. “This collaboration with Zomato builds on that momentum and will contribute to strategically unlocking one of the fastest-growing consumption opportunities in India’s mobility ecosystem,” he added.
The service was initially soft-launched, and the encouraging response highlighted passenger preference for travel-friendly meals. MakeMyTrip stated that it will soon roll out targeted campaigns to increase awareness of its on-train food delivery service.
Zomato also expressed optimism about the collaboration. Rahul Gupta, Vice President – Product, Zomato, said: This collaboration with MakeMyTrip enables train passengers to conveniently order meals from their favourite restaurants through the MakeMyTrip platform, with direct food delivery to their seats.
As part of a Diwali special offer, travellers booking rail journeys via MakeMyTrip will also receive a complimentary coupon, redeemable on food orders placed through Zomato.
