YSRCP Seeks Lok Sabha Debate Over Andhra Pradesh Law and Order

YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) Lok Sabha MP Maddila Gurumoorthy on Monday submitted an adjournment motion in Parliament, seeking an urgent discussion on what he described as growing incidents of police excesses, crimes against women, attacks on Scheduled Castes and political violence in the state. The motion urges the Centre to take note of the developments and initiate corrective measures through a detailed review.

In his notice, Gurumoorthy claimed that the state has witnessed an alarming rise in alleged police harassment, custodial violence and violations of civil liberties. He referred to the alleged custodial deaths of Sai Krishna in Krishna district and Yedukondalu in SPSR Nellore district, besides citing the deaths of Mala Gangamma, Kranthi Kumar and Sheikh Dariya Hussain. He alleged that a suicide note left by Dariya Hussain blamed police harassment, raising serious concerns over police accountability and custodial safety.

The MP also presented statistics to support his demand for a parliamentary debate. According to the figures cited in the motion, 209 crimes against women were reported in Andhra Pradesh between June 2024 and March 2026, including 126 cases of rape and sexual assault, 12 attempted rape cases, 35 cases of sexual harassment, 97 incidents of physical assault, 34 murders or suspicious deaths and 15 suicides allegedly linked to harassment.

The notice further alleged that 69 incidents involving Scheduled Castes occurred during the same period, including murders, custodial violence, social boycott, land encroachments and offences registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. It also claimed that the state recorded 133 incidents of political violence, including 49 murders, six attempted murders, six kidnappings, 58 assaults and 10 cases of property damage.

Gurumoorthy further claimed that the Andhra Pradesh High Court had made adverse observations on police functioning on 12 occasions and alleged that 79 law and order violations reflected a broader breakdown in governance. Through the adjournment motion, he urged the Central Government to seek a comprehensive report from the state, order impartial and time-bound investigations into the alleged incidents, ensure accountability for those responsible and safeguard the constitutional rights of citizens.
