In a significant development in Andhra Pradesh, YSRCP MLC Ananta Udaya Bhaskar (Anantababu) was arrested on Friday in connection with the sensational murder case of his driver Veedhi Subrahmanyam . Police took him into custody outside the Rajamahendravaram court complex after he stepped out following a hearing. The action was based on serious allegations of intimidating and influencing witnesses .

Anantababu, who is currently out on bail in the driver’s murder case, had allegedly been evading police surveillance in recent days. He appeared before the Rajamahendravaram court on Friday along with his wife Lakshmi Durga for a hearing on a petition seeking cancellation of his bail . Anticipating his presence, police were deployed in large numbers at the court premises. As soon as he exited the courtroom, officers surrounded and detained him, later shifting him to the Sarpavaram Police Station in Kakinada .

A case was registered at the Sarpavaram Police Station on April 20 against Anantababu for allegedly threatening witnesses . According to police, key witnesses Arava Durga Siva Prasad, Arava Manikantha, S. Pawan Kumar, and Mummidi Venkatesh were abducted by the MLC’s associates and confined in an apartment in Kakinada. They were allegedly pressured not to testify against the MLC in court and were offered ₹1 lakh each to alter their statements. They were also threatened with dire consequences if they refused. However, the witnesses reportedly did not succumb to the pressure and instead handed over the money given to them to the police and lodged a complaint.

Special Public Prosecutor Muppalla Subbarao , representing the police, filed a petition in court seeking cancellation of Anantababu’s bail , stating that he had violated bail conditions by attempting to influence witnesses. Police submitted supporting evidence to substantiate the claims.

Meanwhile, disciplinary action has been taken against Sarpavaram in-charge CI Ravikumar for alleged negligence in the case. He was shifted to the ‘Vacancy Reserve (VR)’ following accusations that he had leaked information about police movements to the MLC, aiding his evasion. Subsequently, Tuni Rural CI Chennakesava Rao has been appointed as the Investigating Officer , while Kakinada Rural CI Chaitanya Krishna has been given charge of the Sarpavaram Police Station.
