YSRCP Chief Jagan to assess cyclone impact across Andhra districts

Former Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is set to review the situation in cyclone-affected districts of Andhra Pradesh through a video conference with regional coordinators and district presidents, party sources said on Wednesday.

According to sources, the YSRCP chief will discuss the extent of damage caused by Cyclone Montha and direct party leaders to ensure that affected families receive timely assistance. The meeting aims to coordinate relief efforts by party cadres, who have been visiting cyclone-hit villages to help people relocate to safer areas and distribute food and essentials.

However, as of Thursday afternoon, no formal instructions or public statement have been issued by Jagan Mohan Reddy regarding the cyclone response. There are also no verified reports suggesting that the former Chief Minister has travelled abroad in recent days. Party officials confirmed that he continues to oversee activities from Tadepalli, where he is scheduled to conduct the review.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that Cyclone Montha made landfall along the north Andhra–south Odisha coast on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to several parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha. The system has since weakened into a deep depression.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday conducted an aerial survey over the Amaravati region and visited cyclone-affected areas in Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district to assess the situation on the ground. Naidu instructed officials to speed up relief operations, restore power supply, and take preventive measures in low-lying areas.

Officials from the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) said that teams have been deployed across coastal districts to clear uprooted trees, restore road connectivity, and assist families in temporary shelters. Medical and sanitation teams have also been sent to prevent post-cyclone health risks.

In neighbouring Telangana, the cyclone’s outer bands brought moderate to heavy rainfall across several districts. According to the Telangana Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department, the state recorded an average cumulative rainfall of 15.4 mm till 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Warangal district reported the highest rainfall at 77.8 mm, followed by Mahabubabad (73.3 mm), Jangaon (51.5 mm), Yadadri Bhuvanagiri (41.2 mm), and Hanumakonda (35.8 mm). The lowest rainfall was recorded in Mulugu (4.5 mm) and Jayashankar Bhupalpally (4.8 mm) districts.

Both state governments have taken up immediate restoration measures, including clearing debris, supplying drinking water, and supporting farmers whose crops were damaged. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay cautious as river and reservoir water levels remain high.

While Chief Minister Naidu continues to lead official relief operations, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s planned review meeting is expected to focus on ensuring fair distribution of aid and mobilizing YSRCP workers for rehabilitation efforts in cyclone-affected communities.
