Panic gripped a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district after a handwritten suicide note, a pair of slippers and an Aadhaar card were found abandoned on a bridge over the Saryu river, prompting police and locals to launch a massive six-hour search operation fearing that a young man had jumped into the water.

The incident came to light early Tuesday morning when villagers spotted the belongings near the railing of the bridge in the Bhaglapur area and alerted the police. On examining the items, officers identified the owner through the Aadhaar card as 22-year-old Ayodhya Rajbhar, a resident of Bhatauli village under the Mail police station limits.

The contents of the handwritten note intensified fears that the youth had taken the extreme step. Police teams immediately began searching the river and nearby areas while anxious family members gathered at the spot hoping for news.

According to police, Rajbhar had left home three days earlier after informing his family that he was travelling to Mumbai in search of work. His relatives believed he had gone there for employment.

As the search operation continued for nearly six hours , police later received information that the youth had safely returned home. Officers rushed to his residence and questioned him about the incident.

During interrogation, Rajbhar reportedly told police that he had been facing family tensions and mental stress. In a moment of anger and frustration, he left behind the suicide note, slippers and Aadhaar card on the bridge to make it appear that he had jumped into the river.

However, he later reconsidered his decision and returned home safely.

Mail SHO Santosh Singh said the youth’s statement has been recorded and further investigation is underway.
