Youth Congress Launches Statewide Campaign For Gig Workers In Andhra Pradesh
The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has launched a statewide campaign in Andhra Pradesh to highlight the concerns of gig workers, sanitation staff and street vendors, calling for greater recognition, workplace security and access to constitutional rights.
The campaign poster was unveiled in Vijayawada on Friday, marking the expansion of an initiative aimed at taking the concerns of workers directly to the government. IYC leaders said the campaign would focus on ensuring that workers in these often overlooked sectors receive dignity, recognition and social security.
IYC national secretary Mamatha Nagireddy said gig workers, sanitation personnel and street vendors play a vital role in keeping society and the economy functioning. “They deserve proper respect, recognition and constitutional rights,” she said, stressing the need to address their everyday challenges.
The organisation said the campaign is initially being taken up in five cities, with activities already held in three. Campaign programmes were launched in Vijayawada and Guntur on Friday. As part of the initiative, IYC teams will meet workers and residents at the grassroots level, document their day-to-day difficulties and take their concerns to the appropriate authorities.
IYC national secretary Joshua Gerard said the initiative goes beyond a poster launch and represents a commitment to fight for recognition, safety and a dignified life for every worker in the state.
The Youth Congress plans to extend the campaign beyond Vijayawada and Guntur to all districts of Andhra Pradesh. Besides creating wider awareness about the difficulties faced by workers, the organisation said it would push for policies and welfare measures aimed at improving their working and living conditions.
The campaign is expected to focus particularly on issues that affect workers on a daily basis, while building pressure on the government to respond with concrete measures for their welfare.
