You’re Not From Here: Sikh Elder Assaulted In Ontario Racist Attack Caught On Video

An elderly Sikh man was assaulted in a hate-motivated attack in Woodstock, Ontario, after a youth allegedly shouted racist abuse including “get out of my country,” with the incident captured on viral social media video , prompting widespread condemnation and police action.

The incident occurred on April 22 around 11:35 a.m. on Knights Lane, when the victim, identified in reports as Shingara Singh , was walking on a sidewalk en route to a gurdwara when he was approached and unprovokedly shoved by the youth, according to Woodstock Police.

Authorities said the attack was ethnically targeted , with the accused repeatedly using racist slurs, mocking the victim’s accent, and issuing threats including violent language seen in circulating footage. The victim was not physically injured , but police described it as a serious hate-motivated incident.

Following the assault, the youth allegedly fled by jumping a fence into Turtle Island School property before leaving the area. Police confirmed that no students were harmed.

The accused has been arrested and charged with assault, uttering threats, and criminal harassment involving threatening conduct , and remains in custody pending a bail hearing. The suspect cannot be publicly identified due to youth protection laws.

Police confirmed that multiple videos helped investigators, showing repeated racist abuse. The Woodstock Police Service said hate has no place in the community and urged reporting of such incidents.

The World Sikh Organisation condemned the attack, calling it part of a broader pattern of anti-Sikh hate in Canada and urging stronger systemic measures, public education, and institutional coordination to address rising hate incidents.
