'Your Generation Can Lift Tamil Nadu's GDP': Finance Minister to Students

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson on Saturday called on the youth to play a leading role in strengthening the state's economy and eliminating social evils, while reaffirming the government's commitment to corruption-free governance and women's safety .

Addressing the convocation ceremony at a private educational institution, Wilson said the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay , is preparing the state for future technological advancements. He highlighted that Tamil Nadu has established India's first dedicated Ministry for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to adapt to rapid global technological changes.

The Minister said the government's priorities are ensuring transparent administration and creating a safer environment for women. He also assured aspiring entrepreneurs that they can establish businesses and complete online land registrations without paying bribes.

Referring to the state's recently released white paper on finances, Wilson noted that the per capita debt burden stands at Rs 1.60 lakh . He urged the younger generation to contribute innovative ideas to boost Tamil Nadu's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and help overcome the financial challenges facing the state.

During the event, Wilson administered a pledge against giving and receiving dowry , describing the practice as a serious social evil that continues to cause deaths and family disputes. He also encouraged educational institutions to introduce human value education as part of their curriculum.

The Minister further advised graduates to reduce mobile phone screen time and instead read biographies and autobiographies of accomplished personalities. Citing the lives of Muhammad Ali, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo , he said their journeys demonstrate how determination, resilience, and self-belief can help individuals overcome adversity and prepare for future challenges.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Public Works and Sports Development Aadhav Arjuna was also present at the convocation ceremony.
