Yotta, BHASHINI partnership boosts India’s sovereign AI capabilities
India is taking a major leap towards AI self-reliance and data sovereignty through the collaboration between Yotta Data Services and BHASHINI (Bhasha Artificial Intelligence National Initiative) . The partnership has successfully migrated BHASHINI’s national language AI platform from a global hyperscaler to indigenous cloud and GPU infrastructure , marking a milestone in India’s journey toward population-scale AI.
Under this collaboration, Yotta provides the sovereign cloud infrastructure and GPU capabilities , including its Government Community Cloud (GCC) and Shakti Cloud powered by NVIDIA H100 GPUs. BHASHINI, India’s multilingual AI platform, brings language datasets, AI models, APIs and citizen-facing services to the deployment. Together, the two ensure that sensitive data, language resources and AI services remain entirely within India, giving the country full control over its critical AI infrastructure.
Until now, India had largely depended on global hyperscalers due to their advanced data centres, high-performance GPUs, and reliability in handling large-scale AI workloads. The BHASHINI migration demonstrates that domestic cloud providers can now match or exceed hyperscaler capabilities , delivering mission-critical AI services at scale.
The collaboration has been tested at real-world population scale during Maha Kumbh 2025, the world’s largest religious gathering. BHASHINI’s AI services provided real-time translation and voice assistance in over 11 Indian languages , handling massive simultaneous demand while maintaining high reliability, despite network variability and diverse accents.
The Ministry of Electronics and IT reported that the migration resulted in up to 40 percent performance improvement, 20-30 percent cost savings, and 99.99 percent uptime , processing over 200 TiB of data and more than 3.5 billion files without any data loss. The deployment was completed in just two to three months.
Officials highlighted that the new architecture is open-source and cloud-agnostic , reducing vendor dependency and providing a reusable reference framework for other ministries, public sector units, and large-scale national programmes. This model allows India to transition key digital public goods from foreign hyperscalers to indigenous infrastructure securely and efficiently.
Experts say the collaboration sets a blueprint for future public sector AI deployments, supporting digital inclusion, governance, economic growth, and technological self-reliance . By combining BHASHINI’s AI capabilities with Yotta’s sovereign cloud , India is demonstrating its readiness to run large-scale AI workloads entirely on domestic infrastructure, turning sovereign AI from a policy objective into a deployable national utility.
