Xi Jinping meets Russian FM Lavrov, calls relations with Moscow ‘precious’

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday described China–Russia relations as “precious” amid rising global instability , multiple conflicts, and what he called a rapidly changing international order, including the ongoing Iran war.

Xi made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov , who is on a two-day visit aimed at strengthening high-level diplomatic coordination between the two countries.

Xi said the stability and certainty of China–Russia ties stand out in a world marked by “chaos and transformation,” adding that both sides must deepen strategic communication and reinforce political trust. He urged the two foreign ministries to fully implement the consensus reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin .

He further called for strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership , saying it should “stand higher, walk more steadily and go further,” according to official readouts.

Beyond bilateral ties, Xi framed the relationship within a broader global context, urging both countries to defend their legitimate interests , uphold multilateralism , and strengthen the role of the United Nations . He also stressed support for the unity of Global South countries , positioning China and Russia as key voices in shaping a more “just and equitable international order.”

Lavrov’s talks in Beijing also covered the Iran war , the Ukraine conflict, and wider geopolitical tensions. Russia and China reportedly exchanged views on coordination within multilateral platforms such as the UN, BRICS, SCO, G20, and APEC , reflecting their expanding diplomatic alignment.

Xi also emphasized that both nations, as permanent members of the UN Security Council , carry a responsibility to promote global stability and resist unilateral pressure in international affairs.

The meeting comes amid heightened global uncertainty linked to the Iran conflict, which has disrupted energy markets and intensified diplomatic tensions. U.S. President Donald Trump has recently claimed the war is “close to over,” though fighting and negotiations remain unresolved.

Lavrov conveyed greetings from President Putin, with both sides signaling preparations for a possible Putin–Xi summit later this year , underscoring continued high-level engagement.
