Wyndham Clark Wins BMW Championship After Blowing Five-Shot Lead Against Rory McIlroy

Wyndham Clark turned another Sunday under pressure into another defining victory, overcoming a five-shot lead that disappeared against Rory McIlroy before producing a decisive finish to win the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club. Clark closed with an even-par 70 and birdied the final three holes to finish at 17-under 263, beating Patrick Cantlay by three shots for his third PGA Tour title of 2026.

The victory caps a remarkable season for Clark, who has already won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and his second U.S. Open. The BMW Championship adds a FedExCup Playoffs title to that résumé and strengthens his case in the PGA Tour Player of the Year discussion. Clark also rose to No. 3 in the FedExCup standings, behind Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Clark entered the final round with a five-shot advantage after a 5-under 65 on Saturday. McIlroy, however, steadily erased the deficit and caught Clark with six holes remaining, setting up a tense finish. The pressure was familiar for Clark, who had also watched a substantial lead shrink during his U.S. Open victory while Scottie Scheffler chased him.

The decisive moment came on the par-3 16th. After McIlroy hit an excellent tee shot, Clark responded with a superb 5-iron to roughly 15 feet and converted the birdie. McIlroy's putt to remain tied missed, and Clark suddenly had the advantage again. He then birdied the 17th and 18th, producing a three-hole finishing burst that transformed a potential collapse into a three-shot victory.

Clark admitted afterward that he had struggled through much of the round, making what he called “dumb bogeys” and failing to find anything on the greens. The birdie at No. 16 changed his mindset. “ Darth Vader had more fun, ” Clark joked, reflecting on the tension he had embraced down the stretch.

McIlroy finished third, while Cantlay secured second place with a 68. Cantlay's result was especially important because he entered the week outside the top 30 in the FedExCup standings. His strong finish moved him into the Tour Championship field at East Lake, where the season will conclude.

Gary Woodland also produced an emotional highlight, tying for fourth and moving into the top 30. His return to East Lake will be his first since 2019 after undergoing brain surgery three years ago. Robert MacIntyre also moved into the top 30 after closing with a 65, while Rickie Fowler, Bud Cauley and Kurt Kitayama fell out. British Open champion Ryan Fox secured the final qualifying position.

Clark's victory also secured him an automatic Presidents Cup spot, joining Scheffler, Cameron Young, Russell Henley, Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa. U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker will make six additional selections.

With three victories, including a major and a playoff title, Clark's 2026 campaign has become the best of his career. More importantly, Bellerive showed that when another huge lead began slipping away, Clark found a way to finish rather than fold.
