Wyndham Clark Overcomes Double Bogey to Seize Commanding BMW Championship Lead

Wyndham Clark turned an early disaster into a dominant display at Bellerive Country Club, firing a 5-under 65 to take a commanding five-shot lead into the final round of the BMW Championship.

Clark, who had been bogey-free through the opening 36 holes, endured a nightmare start on Saturday. He found a bunker off the first tee, went into the right rough with his next shot and came up short of the green. After chipping to seven feet, he missed the putt and carded a costly double bogey.

But the setback barely lasted.

With encouragement from his caddie to embrace the challenge, Clark responded with a remarkable burst of golf. He made five birdies in an eight-hole stretch, completely changing the complexion of the tournament.

He began the charge with a birdie on the seventh, followed by an eagle opportunity on the par-5 eighth after hitting a 5-wood to 12 feet. Clark then holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the 10th and added further birdies on the 11th, 13th and 14th.

Despite a closing bogey, he finished with a 65 and a five-shot advantage.

Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay share second place. McIlroy closed with three consecutive birdies and saved par from a bunker on the 18th for a 65, while Cantlay birdied the final hole for a 66.

The final round carries major significance for Cantlay, who sits No. 43 in the FedEx Cup standings and needs a strong finish to break into the top 30 and reach next week's Tour Championship.

Clark is chasing his third win of the year, following his U.S. Open triumph, and another victory could strengthen his case for PGA Tour Player of the Year.

With a five-shot cushion, Clark now controls the tournament heading into Sunday's finale.
