‘Wrong Precedent’: R B Udhayakumar Criticises Jobs for Karur Stampede Victims’ Kin

Senior AIADMK leader R B Udhayakumar has criticised the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to provide government jobs to the families of the 41 people who died in the 2025 Karur stampede during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally , calling the move a departure from established recruitment practices.

Speaking to reporters, Udhayakumar said government appointments should follow the state’s regular recruitment process, including selections conducted through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) . He argued that several young candidates spend years preparing for competitive examinations to secure government employment and that direct appointments could affect their opportunities.

The former minister said providing jobs as compensation, without following conventional procedures, could set a precedent for similar demands in the future. He suggested that financial support from the political party’s own resources would have been a more appropriate way to assist the affected families.

“If Vijay had provided financial assistance from the TVK party fund, people would have appreciated the gesture,” Udhayakumar said, while questioning the government’s approach.

The Tamil Nadu government’s decision has triggered public discussion, with opinions divided over the issue. Supporters of the move have said providing employment to families who lost their earning members in a tragic incident is a form of humanitarian assistance and social support. They argue that such measures can help affected families rebuild their lives after an unexpected loss.

Others have echoed concerns similar to those raised by Udhayakumar, saying government employment should ideally remain linked to transparent recruitment systems to ensure equal opportunities for all aspirants. The debate has brought attention to the broader question of how governments should balance compassionate assistance for disaster victims with maintaining fairness and consistency in public recruitment policies.

Meanwhile, Udhayakumar also raised allegations regarding the functioning of the Chief Minister’s administration, claiming that decision-making was being influenced by individuals outside the formal bureaucratic structure. The ruling side has not yet issued a detailed response to these allegations.
