WPL: Gujarat Giants edge Mumbai Indians by 11 runs
Gujarat Giants kept their Women’s Premier League 2026 campaign firmly on track with a hard fought 11 run win over Mumbai Indians in a crucial league match at Vadodara on Friday night, tightening their grip on an Eliminator spot .
Batting first after winning the toss, the Giants posted a competitive 167 for 4 in their 20 overs on a flat surface that rewarded clean hitting. Openers Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine provided a steady start before captain Ashleigh Gardner took charge in the middle overs. Gardner’s authoritative stroke play, combined with support from Georgia Wareham , ensured Gujarat maintained momentum despite losing wickets at regular intervals. Mumbai’s bowlers, led by Shabnim Ismail and Amelia Kerr , kept things tight but could not prevent the Giants from crossing the 160 mark.
Chasing 168, Mumbai Indians suffered early setbacks as Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver Brunt fell cheaply, leaving the middle order with plenty to do. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur rose to the occasion with a valiant half century , anchoring the chase and briefly keeping Mumbai in contention. However, the required run rate continued to climb, and a lack of sustained partnerships proved costly.
Gujarat’s bowlers held their nerve in the closing overs, with Sophie Devine and Rajeshwari Gayakwad striking at key moments to break Mumbai’s resistance. Despite Harmanpreet’s late surge, Mumbai were restricted to 156 for 9 , falling short by 11 runs.
The win strengthens Gujarat Giants’ position near the top of the table, while Mumbai Indians remain in the hunt but face increased pressure heading into the final league fixtures.
