World tourism day 2025 - India emerges as global hub for travel and wellness

As the world observes Tourism Day today, India stands at the forefront of a transformative journey to establish itself as a premier global tourism destination. The Union Budget 2025-26 has allocated ₹2,541.06 crore to bolster infrastructure, skill development, and travel facilitation, signaling a robust commitment to the sector's growth.

Strategic infrastructure development

A cornerstone of India's tourism strategy is the development of 50 top tourist destinations in partnership with state governments through a challenge mode. This initiative aims to provide world-class facilities and connectivity, ensuring a seamless experience for travelers. Additionally, 40 projects across 23 states will receive interest-free loans totaling ₹3,295.8 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment, further enhancing infrastructure.

Public-Private Partnerships

The government is actively fostering collaborations with private entities to enhance hospitality offerings. Notably, the Taj Ganga Kutir Resort & Spa in Raichak, West Bengal, developed in partnership with the Ambuja Neotia Group, exemplifies such collaborations. Spanning 100 acres, the resort features 155 rooms and suites, a renowned wellness spa, and extensive banqueting space, underscoring the potential of public-private partnerships in elevating India's tourism infrastructure.

Visa reforms for enhanced accessibility

To facilitate smoother travel experiences, In the Union Budget 2025–26, the government announced major reforms to boost inbound travel, including proposals to streamline the e-visa system and introduce visa-fee waivers for select tourist groups. The initiative is designed to attract a wide spectrum of visitors, with a special focus on leisure tourists to enhance general arrivals, medical tourists as India positions itself as a global hub for medical care, MICE travelers seeking destinations for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions, as well as spiritual and heritage tourists drawn to the country’s pilgrimage sites, yoga retreats, and wellness experiences. These reforms aim to simplify the visa application process, making India more accessible to international tourists and encouraging increased foreign arrivals.

Medical Tourism - India’s emerging global hub

Medical tourism has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments of India’s services sector, positioning the country as a global hub for affordable and high-quality healthcare. In 2025 alone, India welcomed over 1.3 lakh foreign medical tourists between January and April, reflecting its growing prominence in this sector. The majority of these patients came from Bangladesh, Iraq, Somalia, Oman, and Uzbekistan, seeking advanced treatment across cardiology, orthopedics, oncology, neurology, and organ transplants.

India’s strength lies in its unique combination of world-class healthcare infrastructure, highly skilled doctors, and cost-effective treatments that are often 60–80% cheaper compared to developed nations. Alongside modern medicine, India also attracts wellness seekers through Ayurveda, Yoga, and holistic healing, further diversifying its appeal. Key medical hubs such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Delhi have become global destinations for specialized care.

Globally, Thailand currently leads the medical tourism market, drawing millions annually, followed by Turkey, Malaysia, and Singapore. However, India is rapidly closing the gap, supported by initiatives like the “Heal in India” programme and simplified medical visa systems. With rising international patient inflows and government-backed promotion, India is poised to cement its position as a leading global healthcare destination in the coming decade.

Global engagement and Industry outlook

India's proactive participation in international tourism forums underscores its commitment to becoming a global tourism hub. The 'Care Connect' summit in Raipur on 24 September 2025, where Chhattisgarh unveiled investment proposals worth ₹3,119 crore focusing on healthcare and tourism, highlights strategic initiatives to promote tourism and economic growth.

Over the past five years, India has witnessed significant strides in tourism development. Initiatives like the 'Dekho Apna Desh' campaign have bolstered domestic tourism, while infrastructure projects under the “Swadesh Darshan” Scheme have enhanced connectivity. These efforts contributed to a steady increase in tourist arrivals and a growing recognition of India as a diverse and vibrant travel destination.
