India’s campaign at the World Squash Championships came to an end after Veer Chotrani suffered a straight-game defeat against Egyptian superstar and defending champion Mostafa Asal in the men’s second round in Giza, Egypt .

Facing the daunting challenge of taking on the world No. 1 , Chotrani struggled to match Asal’s relentless pace, power, and precision. The Egyptian dominated the contest from the very beginning and sealed the match comfortably 11-5, 11-2, 11-4 .

For Chotrani, currently ranked World No. 45 , reaching the second round itself was a positive step on one of squash’s biggest stages. However, against a player widely regarded as one of the most physically dominant figures in modern squash, the Indian found very little room to settle into rhythm.

Asal, known for his explosive movement and aggressive style, looked in complete control throughout the encounter. Despite the one-sided scoreline, the Egyptian was full of praise for Chotrani after the match and acknowledged the familiarity they share from their junior days.

Veer is one of the players that can catch you off at any moment in time, so I'm really happy to get the win today, ” Asal said after the victory.

The Egyptian also revealed that the two have known each other for years through junior competitions and training sessions in New York.

We’ve played a lot in juniors before. We always train in New York together, ” he added.

Chotrani’s defeat also marked the end of India’s presence in the tournament after earlier first-round exits for Abhay Singh , Ramit Tandon , and Velavan Senthilkumar .

While the Indian contingent could not progress deep into the championship, the experience of competing against the world’s elite is expected to play a key role in the development of the country’s next generation of squash players.
