World Fisheries Day 2025: India doubles fish production, boosts global competitiveness

India’s fisheries sector has witnessed remarkable growth since the launch of the Blue Revolution and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) . Annual fish production has more than doubled from 95.79 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 to 195 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 , while seafood exports have risen from ₹30,213 crore to ₹62,408 crore , with value-added products increasing from 2% to 11%.

Under PMMSY, proposals worth ₹21,274 crore have been approved between 2020-21 and 2024-25, supporting activities along the fisheries value chain, including quality fish production, brackish water aquaculture, disease management, technology adoption, and modern post-harvest infrastructure. During this period, fish production grew by 38% and exports by 34% , reflecting the scheme’s contribution to enhancing India’s global competitiveness.

On the occasion of World Fisheries Day, 21st November 2025 , the National Framework on Traceability in Fisheries and Aquaculture 2025 was launched under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Samridhi Sah Yojana (PM-MKSSY). The framework aims to establish a digital traceability system across the fisheries and aquaculture value chain, ensuring compliance with domestic and international standards, promoting food safety and quality assurance, and enhancing transparency and consumer confidence. It also facilitates market access for small-scale fishers and aquaculture farmers, boosting both domestic sales and exports.

The framework will be implemented and monitored through the National Level Governance Committee (NLGC) , providing strategic oversight and policy guidance, and an Adoption Committee , which recommends mechanisms for adoption of IT-based traceability by all stakeholders. Adequate support for training and capacity building will empower small-scale operators, particularly in states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, enabling them to meet international standards, expand exports, adopt modern practices, and enhance income.

Shri Rajeev Ranjan Singh (Lallan Singh) , Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, emphasized that while the framework has just been launched and no pilot projects have been conducted yet, it represents a major step toward making India a quality-focused, transparent, and globally competitive fisheries hub.
