With the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup already underway, football and geopolitics have once again collided. Iran’s football federation has publicly demanded assurances from the tournament hosts, the United States, Canada and Mexico , over visas, security and the treatment of Iranian players and officials during the global event.

Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj said the country would “definitely” participate in the tournament but stressed that all players, coaching staff and officials must receive visas without complications, particularly those who completed their mandatory military service with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The issue has gained international attention because both the United States and Canada classify the IRGC as a terrorist organization. The matter became more sensitive after Canadian authorities reportedly denied Taj entry for a recent FIFA Congress due to his alleged past links with the Revolutionary Guard.

Iran’s concerns come at a time of heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington following recent military conflict in the region and ongoing travel restrictions imposed on Iranian citizens. Tehran has now sought guarantees from FIFA regarding the respectful treatment of its national team, flag and anthem during the tournament.

One of the major talking points surrounds Iranian captain Mehdi Taremi , who completed compulsory military service linked to the Guard, a common practice in Iran where conscripts can be assigned to different state institutions.

Despite the political complications, Iran remains one of Asia’s strongest footballing nations. The team qualified comfortably for the World Cup, losing just one match during the Asian qualifiers . Drawn alongside Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt in Group G, Iran will begin its campaign against New Zealand in Inglewood near Los Angeles.

The country has now qualified for four consecutive World Cups and seven overall. However, Iran is still chasing history, having never progressed beyond the group stage in the tournament’s history.

As football’s biggest event approaches, Iran’s demands highlight how global politics and sport continue to intersect on the world stage.
