In a significant and unprecedented disciplinary decision, Argentina national football team defender Nicolas Otamendi and Ecuador national football team midfielder Moises Caicedo will not serve their one match suspensions during the upcoming FIFA World Cup , despite being sent off in their final qualifying games.

The ruling was announced by FIFA, confirming that most disciplinary sanctions from the qualifiers will not carry forward into the final tournament. This includes single yellow cards and pending short term bans , which will now be effectively reset for the World Cup.

FIFA said the move is aimed at ensuring teams can field their strongest possible squads on football’s biggest stage. The decision was taken by the FIFA Bureau, which includes FIFA President Gianni Infantino and heads of the six continental football bodies.

Both players were sent off in Ecuador’s 1-0 win over Argentina in September. Otamendi received a direct red card for a last man foul , while Caicedo was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card for a heavy tackle . Under normal rules, both would have missed their team’s opening World Cup match.

However, under the new ruling, their suspensions will now be served in future competitions after the World Cup instead.

The decision follows a similar precedent involving Cristiano Ronaldo, where a disciplinary action was also adjusted to avoid impacting World Cup participation.

Defending champions Argentina will begin their campaign against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City , while Ecuador open against Ivory Coast on June 14 in Philadelphia .

The move marks one of the most controversial and notable disciplinary relaxations in recent FIFA history, potentially reshaping how qualifier stage suspensions are handled in the future.
