Workplace Stress Turns Fatal: Bank manager killed amid leave row

A shocking killing inside a bank in Ghaziabad has reignited concerns over how workplace disputes particularly around leave and employee welfare are handled in high-stress jobs.

Police said a 50-year-old security guard , allegedly frustrated over salary reduction and repeated denial of leave , entered the manager’s cabin at a Punjab and Sind Bank branch in Loni and shot the branch manager, 34-year-old Abhishek Kumar , at close range on Monday. Kumar was rushed to a Delhi hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The accused, Ravindra Hooda , along with his associate Shishupal, has been arrested. Investigators recovered a double-barrel gun used in the attack and registered a murder case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with charges under the Arms Act.

According to police interrogation, Hooda had been working at the branch for about two and a half months and claimed his salary had been cut while his requests for leave were repeatedly rejected. Officials said an argument with the manager preceded the shooting.

The incident has drawn attention to a broader workplace issue: access to basic employee rights such as leave . Under Indian labour norms, paid leave, sick leave and weekly rest are considered essential protections, intended to safeguard workers’ physical and mental well-being. Experts note that denial of leave especially in low-paid or contract roles like private security can heighten stress, fatigue and conflict.

The case also echoes other disturbing reports where employees resorted to extreme measures to secure time off, including a recent incident in which a worker allegedly humiliated himself to prove illness after leave was denied. Such episodes highlight growing concerns about workplace dignity and grievance redressal mechanisms.

Police said both accused are from Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh. Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and any prior disputes at the branch.

While the crime itself is an extreme and unlawful act, labour advocates say it underscores the urgent need for fair leave policies, transparent communication and mental-health support to prevent workplace tensions from escalating into tragedy.
