
Won't Allow Our Soil to Be Used Against India: Myanmar President Assures PM Modi
Myanmar President General Min Aung Hlaing has assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his country's territory will not be allowed to be used against India's security interests, reaffirming a key commitment during wide-ranging talks in New Delhi.
Briefing reporters, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said both leaders underscored the importance of preventing the misuse of sovereign territory for activities inimical to each other's security interests. Modi also reaffirmed India's support for Myanmar's sovereignty and territorial integrity .
In a post on X, Modi described his meeting with the Myanmar President as "productive" and welcomed India being chosen for his first foreign visit after assuming office. The Prime Minister also highlighted the significance of Hlaing beginning his visit at Bodh Gaya , reflecting the deep Buddhist and civilisational links between the two countries.
The leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and reaffirmed Myanmar's importance in India's Neighbourhood First , Act East and Indo-Pacific policies. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi reiterated India's commitment to remain Myanmar's trusted neighbour, reliable partner and steadfast first responder during times of crisis under its Neighbourhood First, Act East and MAHASAGAR policies.
Security issues featured prominently, including concerns over insurgent groups near the border, refugee movements, cybercrime and transnational criminal networks. Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in maritime security , cyber security, critical minerals and artificial intelligence .
Economic engagement was another major focus. Bilateral trade exceeds USD 2 billion , with India's exports crossing USD 600 million and Myanmar's exports to India surpassing USD 1.5 billion. The leaders reviewed progress on the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, while exploring greater cooperation in energy, infrastructure and investment. Hlaing also invited Modi to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient date.
