Women’s Safety Is Our Responsibility: CP Sajjanar as SHE Teams Resolve 1,149 Complaints
Reaffirming the city police’s firm commitment to women’s safety , Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar said there would be zero tolerance towards harassment, particularly cyber crimes and digital blackmailing . Addressing the media, he said the police would not compromise under any circumstances when it comes to protecting women and ensuring their dignity and privacy .
According to official data, Hyderabad SHE Teams resolved 1,149 complaints over the past year and apprehended 3,826 harassers , reflecting both strict enforcement and growing confidence among women to report crimes. The Commissioner stressed that women should not remain silent due to fear or social stigma, assuring that the police would stand firmly by every victim while safeguarding their identity.
An analysis of registered cases revealed a sharp rise in cyber harassment , with 366 blackmailing cases emerging as the most common offence. Offenders were found exploiting social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to befriend women, later misusing video calls , photos, or chats to demand money or sexual favours. In several cases, former partners threatened women using old images, even attempting to disrupt marriages. SHE Teams also cracked 121 cases of late-night internet call harassment and 82 cases involving fake profiles posting obscene content.
Police observed a disturbing increase in online abuse driven by psychological voyeurism , where women were targeted through anonymous calls and obscene digital material. Using forensic technology , including digital evidence analysis, SHE Teams identified accused persons in over 250 cases , helping victims overcome severe mental stress and regain confidence.
Sharing their experiences, a 22-year-old woman said she lived in constant fear that a single click could destroy her life. She said approaching SHE Teams felt like “breathing freely again,” as they protected not only her safety but also her self-respect . Another working woman recalled that harassment which began in the name of love escalated into death threats, making even her workplace unsafe, until police intervention restored her sense of security.
Swift action by SHE Teams provided immediate relief in several cases. In one incident, a woman was blackmailed with private photographs by a trusted acquaintance demanding money. After she approached the police, the accused was quickly arrested and legal action initiated. In another case, persistent stalking continued despite blocking the offender online, but SHE Teams ensured protection and legal support.
The teams also resolved 98 cases of exploitation under false marriage promises , where women were subjected to mental, physical, and financial abuse. Victims were provided counselling , and criminal cases were registered against the accused.
Apart from acting on complaints, 15 SHE Teams conducted undercover surveillance in civil dress at bus stations, colleges, and crowded areas. While minor offences were addressed through counselling, serious cases resulted in FIR registration , arrests, and judicial custody. Women facing any form of harassment are urged to dial 100 or contact the SHE Teams WhatsApp helpline 949061655 , the Commissioner said, reiterating that Hyderabad Police remain committed to ensuring safety for every woman, both online and offline.
