Women’s aid on pause, mega projects in play - BRS slams T’gana govt

The political battle between the ruling Congress party and the opposition BRS in Telangana is intensifying. While the Congress government highlights its initiatives and promises, the BRS is sharply criticizing government spending, particularly on women’s welfare.

The focus of the controversy is the Congress government’s election promise to provide a monthly financial aid of Rs 2,500 to women under a women’s empowerment scheme. Despite being in power for several months, the government has yet to implement the scheme. The BRS claims that this is a critical program for women’s financial independence and accuses the government of citing lack of funds as an excuse.

Billions spent on projects

The BRS points out that while funds for women are unavailable, the government is allocating massive amounts for other projects. For instance, the state announced it will spend Rs 3.5 lakh crore on hosting Olympics-style sports events, and Rs 1.5 lakh crore for beautification of the Musi river. The BRS questions why funds are readily available for such projects but not for direct welfare programs that affect daily life.

Similarly, the government’s plan to build a new “Fourth City” with a budget of Rs 50,000 crore has drawn criticism. The BRS argues that instead of improving infrastructure in existing cities, spending on new, high-cost projects is unreasonable. The opposition also pointed out Rs 2,000 crore spent on renaming government institutions, Rs 250 crore on ministers’ helicopter tours, Rs 225 crore for beach construction in Hyderabad, and Rs 200 crore for Miss World beauty contests. They argue these expenditures reflect government extravagance rather than addressing public needs.

BRS questions priorities

“The government has money for lavish events and official luxuries, but not for providing Rs 2,500 monthly aid to women who truly need it,” the BRS said. These allegations have sparked intense debate in Telangana, highlighting the growing political conflict. How the Congress government responds to these accusations - and when it will implement the promised women’s aid - will be closely watched.
