Tennis great Serena Williams is set for a sensational return to Wimbledon singles after receiving the final women’s wild card entry, marking one of the most remarkable comebacks in modern sport.

The announcement from Wimbledon Championships confirmed that the 23 time Grand Slam champion will compete in both singles and doubles at the age of 44 , nearly four years after stepping away from professional tennis.

The decision comes after weeks of speculation following her return to competitive action. Wimbledon officials had reportedly held back the final wild card spot as they awaited her confirmation. When the news was finally released, the response across the tennis world was immediate and emotional.

“This is not a drill,” Wimbledon posted on social media, capturing the shock that followed the announcement. The WTA Tour also reacted, calling it an “iconic return”.

Serena’s most recent singles appearance came at the 2022 US Open , where she lost in the third round to Ajla Tomljanovic. Soon after, she described her departure from tennis as “evolving” rather than retiring, before later welcoming her second daughter in 2023 .

Since her return, Serena has already featured in doubles action, including partnering Venus Williams and later Karolina Muchova in warm up matches. However, questions remain over her physical readiness for the demands of singles competition on grass.

Despite being unranked in singles due to her long absence, her legendary status and past success earned her the wild card entry. Serena has won seven Wimbledon singles titles and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles , all alongside her sister Venus Williams.

At her last Wimbledon appearance in 2022 , she suffered a first round exit against Harmony Tan, but her legacy at the All England Club remains unmatched in the modern era.

The current women’s field is led by world number one Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Iga Swiatek , meaning Serena could face top seeded opposition as early as the opening rounds when the draw is announced.

Her participation now sets the stage for one of Wimbledon’s most closely watched opening weeks in recent memory.
