Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh on Monday assured that the state government will take full responsibility for the safety of Kuki-Zo community members visiting Imphal , the state capital. Speaking at a public event, Singh emphasized that no harm would be allowed to Kuki-Zo individuals in areas dominated by Meiteis , the majority community in Imphal.

The assurance comes against the backdrop of long-standing ethnic tensions in the state. Clashes between Meiteis and Kukis first erupted in May 2023 , rooted in disputes over land, political representation, and local governance. Since then, the two communities have largely avoided each other’s areas, fearing violence and retaliation . As a result, Kuki residents often hesitate to enter Imphal, which is predominantly Meitei, and Meiteis likewise avoid Kuki-dominated regions. The clashes have so far claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands of people .

Singh cited a recent incident involving MLA Vungzagin Valte from Churachandpur. “Day before yesterday, MLA Valte called to congratulate me and offered his help in restoring peace. Later, his son sought medical assistance for him,” the CM said. With guidance from RIMS-Imphal doctors and the state Health Department, Valte received prompt medical care before being transported to New Delhi by air ambulance on Sunday. Singh personally met him at the airport and wished him a speedy recovery .

The CM reiterated that the government will ensure full security for any Kuki-Zo individual visiting Imphal for medical treatment or other purposes. “The state will not allow anything untoward to happen to them,” Singh stated.

Singh took office last week after a year under President’s Rule , promising to restore peace and communal harmony in the restive state. The assurance marks a significant step toward bridging the ethnic divide, encouraging Kuki residents to safely access services and facilities in Imphal without fear.
