Will Kavitha’s strategy work?

Jagruthi president Kavitha has raised the slogan of Social Telangana . Suspended from the BRS, she is now making efforts to carve her own political space. Even during her time in the pink party, Kavitha highlighted the “Social Telangana” slogan and continues to push the same line today. She claims her mission is to ensure participation of BCs, SCs, STs, and minorities in state power. The key question now is: will these communities truly rally behind her? Will her political maneuvers succeed? Can she emerge as a significant force in Telangana politics? Reports suggest she is exploring the possibility of floating a new party. If that happens, who stands to lose, and who gains? Will influential leaders join hands with her? These are questions being widely debated.

Wooing BC leaders

Kavitha has been actively meeting BC leaders across districts. She is reportedly reaching out to BC leaders sidelined within BRS as well as BC, SC, and tribal leaders from other parties. Meanwhile, Teenmaar Mallanna has already formed the Telangana Rajyadhikara Samithi to consolidate BCs under one umbrella. On the other side, the Congress too is attempting to mobilize BCs around caste census and BC reservations. In such a competitive landscape, can Kavitha succeed in pulling BCs to her side? The BJP too had raised the BC slogan in the last Assembly polls, promising a BC Chief Minister if voted to power. With leaders like Bandi Sanjay, Dharmapuri Arvind, and Eatala Rajender in its ranks, the party had even considered making Eatala the state chief, though internal differences prevented it. Clearly, Telangana politics today revolves significantly around BC communities.

So far, there is no evidence that BCs in Telangana have voted en bloc for any single party. Historically, the TDP gave prominence to BCs, but its strength has weakened in the state. Many of its BC leaders have shifted to BRS. Now, all parties are competing to secure BC, SC, ST, and minority votes.

The “Social Telangana” narrative

Kavitha staged a 72-hour protest demanding enhanced BC reservations and disclosure of caste survey data. But attracting BC voters is no easy task, especially since Kavitha herself comes from an upper-caste background. Whether BCs will see her as one of their own and believe her party will truly deliver justice remains uncertain. Further, parties like Mallanna’s Telangana Rajyadhikara Samithi already exist, directly appealing to BCs. Mallanna, with his fiery speeches and youth following, is seen as a strong BC voice. Similarly, for SCs, leader Visharadhan Maharaj has founded the Dharmaswaraj Party , working at the grassroots to unite SCs, BCs, and STs. These parallel efforts pose serious challenges to Kavitha’s strategy.

Congress’s attempt to consolidate BCs

The Congress is now pursuing a nationwide BC consolidation strategy. Rahul Gandhi repeatedly raises the issue of caste census, highlighting the plight of marginalized groups and stressing the need for their political empowerment. Historically, Congress enjoyed the backing of Dalits and minorities. However, the rise of parties like BSP in Uttar Pradesh split some of that base. Meanwhile, the BJP has focused on Hindu consolidation, calling for unity across castes under the Hindutva banner, aided by themes like national security and anti-corruption. In Telangana too, Congress is expected to bank heavily on the caste census issue. With so many options available, it remains unclear whether BCs will actually gravitate toward Kavitha.

What is Kavitha’s strength?

Kavitha was actively involved in the Telangana movement. She participated in Bathukamma festivities across villages, taking the movement forward culturally. This gave her considerable goodwill at the time. She later won as MP from Nizamabad in 2014 but lost the same seat in 2019, signaling a dip in popularity. Her image took further damage with allegations in the Delhi liquor scam. Though seen as a strong voice within BRS as KCR’s daughter, she eventually fell out with the party and was suspended. Despite her belief that she has a strong cadre base through Jagruthi, public sympathy for her remains limited. Even her stint in jail did not generate much public support, with corruption charges tarnishing her image further.

Will KCR step in?

So far, KCR has remained silent on Kavitha’s political moves, with only KTR commenting on the issue. Congress leaders allege her rebellion stems from family property disputes with her brother rather than ideological differences. If true, there’s always a possibility that KCR might intervene to broker peace, prompting her return to BRS. Whether Kavitha indeed launches a party or eventually reconciles with BRS remains to be seen.

If the liquor scam case tightens

Kavitha remains an accused in the Delhi liquor scam and is currently out on bail. If the case turns against her and she is sent back to jail, questions will arise about whether the KCR family will openly back her. For now, she appears determined to carve her own path, believing BRS has denied her due recognition. But her political journey is already facing serious obstacles even before taking off. Whether she can overcome these hurdles will be a matter of time.
