Wildlife week begins at Van Vihar National Park, MP

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday inaugurated the State-level Wildlife Week at Vihar Veethika, Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal. The annual event, being held from October 1 to 7, is celebrated to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and promote the theme of this year: “Human-Wildlife Coexistence.”

On the inaugural day, CM Yadav dedicated new tourist vehicles for the Satpura Tiger Reserve, inaugurated a photo exhibition titled “India's Wildlife: Their Habitat and Mutual Communication,” and presented Wildlife Conservation Awards to recognize efforts in protecting the state’s flora and fauna. Speaking on the occasion, officials highlighted the importance of balancing urban development with wildlife preservation, emphasizing public participation in conservation efforts.

As part of the initiative, Van Vihar has been declared a no-vehicle zone from today, with private vehicles prohibited. Visitors can explore the park using golf carts and bicycles, promoting eco-friendly tourism.

The week-long celebration features a range of public awareness and participatory activities. On the first day, a painting competition welcomed school students, college students, and differently-abled particip ants to express their connection with nature.

Subsequent events include:

• October 2: Bird watching, creativity workshops, college debates, and extempore story competitions for school students.

• October 3: Butterfly watching, treasure hunts, and Mehndi/Palm painting competitions.

• October 4: Bird watching, photography, and rangoli competitions for differently-abled and underprivileged children, alongside a Youth Parliament for school and college students.

• October 5: Run for Wildlife and teachers’ debate competitions.

• October 6: Bird watching for all, workshops on wildlife rescue and monitoring tools, a Wildlife & Nature Expo, debate competitions, and a Walk-through Quiz cum Exhibition.

• October 7: A toddler walk, face painting competitions, and the closing ceremony with prize distribution.

The week aims to educate the public about wildlife protection, encourage eco-conscious tourism, and foster a culture of coexistence with nature. By involving students, teachers, and local communities, the festival reinforces the message that wildlife conservation is a shared responsibility.

Van Vihar’s Wildlife Week not only showcases Madhya Pradesh’s rich biodiversity but also inspires citizens to actively participate in preserving India’s natural heritage.
