Why Mojtaba Khamenei Was Missing From the Funerals of His Father, Wife and 14-Month-Old Daughter?
Mojtaba Khamenei , freshly installed as Iran's Supreme Leader , managed to sit out the one event where his presence was supposedly non-negotiable, his own father's funeral. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 in a joint US Israeli airstrike , along with his daughter, son in law, granddaughter, and Mojtaba's own wife. Three of his brothers showed up to pray beside the coffin. Mojtaba did not.
Officially, it is all about security . Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has openly said any Iranian leader who tries to finish what his father started will meet the same fate, which is a fairly blunt way of saying Mojtaba is a marked man. He is reportedly disfigured and injured in one or both legs from the same strike that killed his father, and a New York Times report says he actually asked to attend the burial and was turned down by his own security apparatus. Even the Supreme Leader, it turns out, does not get final say over his own itinerary.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump decided the funeral was the perfect moment for some casual menace, telling Axios that Iran's entire leadership was conveniently gathered in one place. "One shot and we can take them all out, but we are not going to do that because then we would have nobody to negotiate with," he said, adding that Tehran was "begging to make a deal." Nothing says diplomacy quite like publicly calculating how easy it would be to wipe out the other side's negotiating table.
Unsurprisingly, the mourners were not exactly in a forgiving mood either. Crowds carried posters depicting Trump, JD Vance , Pete Hegseth , and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu in gunsight crosshairs captioned "There will be blood," while one banner offered a reward to "kill them both like dogs" referring to Trump and Netanyahu. Eulogist Mohammad Rasouli asked the crowd why "the most bastard man in the world" was still alive, a line that drew cheers rather than gasps. Banners reading "Kill Trump" made the rounds too, because subtlety was clearly not on the funeral program.
The six day spectacle, running through Tehran , Qom , Najaf , and Karbala before burial in Mashhad on July 9 , has drawn delegations from Hamas , Hezbollah , and the Houthis, alongside Iran's actual government. It is less a farewell and more a carefully staged reminder to Washington and Tel Aviv that the man is dead but the machine keeps running, revenge slogans included.
As for Mojtaba, he remains the leader everyone talks about and nobody has actually seen, ruling a country mourning his father from what increasingly looks like a very well guarded, very well hidden room.
