Who Will Occupy the Chief Minister’s Chair in God’s Own Country?
The political atmosphere in Kerala is heating up ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for April 9. Traditionally dominated by two major alliances, the electoral contest this time has become more intriguing. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is aiming to secure power for a third consecutive term , while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is striving to return to power after a decade. At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is attempting to expand its influence in the state.
Pinarayi Vijayan the Key Strength of LDF
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan remains the central figure in the LDF’s election campaign. The 81-year-old leader is expected to contest again from his stronghold of Dharmadam. Vijayan has earned recognition as a leader capable of handling crises effectively. During his second term, he has pursued the “Vision 2031” plan aimed at transforming Kerala into a knowledge-based economy. However, analysts say anti-incumbency sentiment has also grown after nearly a decade of continuous rule.
A Crucial Contest for Shailaja
Senior CPI(M) leader K. K. Shailaja is another key attraction in the elections. Widely recognised for her handling of the Nipah virus outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic , she has gained international recognition. She has been fielded from the challenging Peravoor constituency , where she is expected to face a strong challenge from Congress leader Sunny Joseph .
Strategy of the LDF Alliance
Support from other parties in the LDF alliance will also be crucial. The coalition includes the Communist Party of India , Kerala Congress (M) , Nationalist Congress Party , Rashtriya Janata Dal , and Janata Dal (Secular) .
The Kerala Congress (M) , led by Jose K. Mani , could influence Christian voters in central Kerala. However, there is some uncertainty over whether he will contest from Pala , the traditional stronghold of his father K. M. Mani .
‘Life-and-Death’ Battle for the UDF
For the Congress-led United Democratic Front , the election is crucial. After spending nearly ten years in opposition, the alliance is trying to return to power.
Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan is expected to play a key role and may contest from Paravur constituency . He has even declared that he would quit politics if the UDF fails to return to power.
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala remains an experienced figure in the alliance. Meanwhile, Chandy Oommen , son of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy , has emerged as a young leader energising the UDF. He recently attracted young voters after winning the Puthuppally by-election with a large majority .
The Indian Union Muslim League is another key partner in the UDF, with its senior leader P. K. Kunhalikutty played the role of a chief strategist. At the same time, K. K. Rema has emerged as an important leader. Following the murder of her husband T. P. Chandrasekharan , a leader of the Revolutionary Marxist Party, has become a symbol of the fight against political violence.
BJP’s ‘New Kerala’ Slogan
The BJP is making strong efforts to expand politically in Kerala. State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar has launched a campaign focused on a development agenda. He is likely to contest from Nemom , a constituency previously won by the BJP.
Former Union minister V. Muraleedharan may be fielded from Kazhakkoottam , while former DGP R. Sreelekha is expected to contest from Vattiyoorkavu . The recent entry of former CPI(M) MLA S. Rajendran into the BJP has further strengthened the party. Firebrand leader Sobha Surendran is also one of the party’s key campaigners.
The BJP hopes to achieve a significant breakthrough in Kerala this time. Encouraging results in recent local body elections have boosted party morale, particularly the victory in the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation . However, breaking the long-standing bipolar politics between the LDF and the UDF remains a major challenge.
CPI(M) Releases First List of 81 Candidates
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) , the principal party in the ruling LDF, has released its first list of 81 candidates . State secretary M. V. Govindan announced the list.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will once again contest from Dharmadam . Along with him, 10 ministers from the current cabinet will also enter the fray. Former health minister K. K. Shailaja has been nominated from Peravoor in Kannur district. The party has also supported six independent candidates in the list.
CPI Announces Candidates for 25 Seats
Another key LDF partner, the Communist Party of India , has announced candidates for 25 constituencies . State secretary Binoy Viswam released the list.
Sitting ministers G. R. Anil , J. Chinchurani , K. Rajan , and P. Prasad will contest again. Leaders who have served two terms as MLAs — Muhammed Muhsin , E. T. Tyson , and V. R. Sunil Kumar — have also been given tickets.
An interesting contest is expected in North Paravur , where CPI candidate E. T. Tyson is likely to face Opposition leader V. D. Satheesan .
Parties Prepare for Electoral Battle
With the announcement of the election schedule, major political parties have begun campaigning in full swing. LDF convenor T. P. Ramakrishnan said seat-sharing within the alliance is almost complete.
Opposition leader V. D. Satheesan expressed confidence that the UDF would win more than 100 seats and form the government. Victories in recent by-elections and local body polls, he said, are encouraging signs.
Meanwhile, Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal , state president of the Indian Union Muslim League , said the party would soon announce its candidates.
Polling on April 9
The Kerala Legislative Assembly has 140 seats , and polling for all constituencies will take place on April 9 . A fierce contest is expected among the LDF, UDF and NDA , with the election schedule officially marking the start of the political battle in the state. The coming weeks are likely to intensify Kerala’s political atmosphere.
