Who Was Lachit Borphukan? Himanta Biswa Sarma Approaches Aditya Dhar for Grand Biopic

Fresh off the success of Dhurandhar , filmmaker Aditya Dhar could be gearing up for another ambitious historical epic. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed that the state government has approached the director to helm a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan , the legendary Ahom commander who led Assam's forces to victory over the Mughal Empire in the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671.

Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Sarma said Dhar is his first choice after being impressed by the scale and storytelling of Dhurandhar . He added that the filmmaker is expected to visit Assam in August to discuss the project, explore locations and understand the state's history. If Dhar is unavailable, the government plans to approach other directors, stressing that the film will be made regardless.

But who was Lachit Borphukan? Revered as one of India's greatest military strategists, he served as commander in chief of the Ahom Kingdom , which ruled much of present day Assam for nearly six centuries. His victory at Saraighat halted Mughal expansion into northeast India, earning him enduring respect. His birth anniversary is observed as Lachit Divas , while the National Defence Academy honours its best cadet each year with the Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal .

Sarma said the film aims to introduce the Assamese hero to audiences across India and the world. Because the story centres on a historic battle against the Mughal Empire, the announcement has also sparked political debate. Supporters call it a long overdue tribute to a forgotten national hero, while critics question its timing and argue that such historical narratives can become intertwined with contemporary politics. The Assam government, however, says its objective is to celebrate Lachit Borphukan's legacy through cinema. Reports have also linked Prabhas to the project after his recent meeting with Dhar, though no official confirmation has been made.
