Who Was Herambh Karmarkar? Pune Engineer Dies in Strait of Hormuz Vessel Attack

A 30-year-old marine engineer from Pune lost his life after a Cyprus-flagged commercial vessel came under attack while passing through the Strait of Hormuz near the coast of Oman, leaving his family waiting for his mortal remains to be brought back to India.

Herambh Karmarkar , who had been serving aboard the container ship GFS Galaxy , was among those caught in the attack that took place early on Sunday. The vessel was transiting one of the world's busiest and most strategically significant shipping routes when it was targeted.

According to his family, Karmarkar's body is currently in the custody of the Oman Navy , and arrangements are being awaited for its repatriation.

"We are awaiting his mortal remains, which are currently with the Oman Navy. Herambh had been on the vessel for the last five months and was due to sign off soon ," his father-in-law, Vivek Tandon , said on Wednesday.

The news has left the family devastated. Karmarkar is survived by his wife, mother and younger sister .

A qualified marine engineer , Karmarkar had completed his studies at the City of Glasgow College in the United Kingdom before joining the merchant navy , where he pursued a career at sea.

Family members chose not to share additional details as they continue to cope with the loss and await the return of his mortal remains.

The attack on the GFS Galaxy has once again drawn attention to the security risks faced by commercial vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz , a vital maritime corridor through which a significant share of the world's energy supplies and global trade passes.
