In an era obsessed with flair, Dhakshineswar Suresh’s rise in Indian tennis has been defined by discipline, routine, and quiet perseverance . From meticulously organised kit bags to years of dawn-to-dusk training, his journey to becoming India’s Davis Cup mainstay has been forged patiently, far from the spotlight.

Dhakshineswar hails from a modest background in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu . His father, Suresh Ekka , a club-level tennis player, introduced him to the sport. Early financial constraints meant opportunities were limited, but Dhakshineswar’s dedication never wavered. He began training under coach Lakshman Chakravarthi in Chennai, travelling nearly 16 kilometres daily by bus between 2010 and 2016 from Surapet to training centres and Loyola College, starting at the age of nine. “He had no ego, no shortcuts. The mornings were for fitness, followed by tennis sessions, and he never shied away from working hard,” Chakravarthi said.

In 2016, Dhakshineswar trained in France and won the U16 Nationals at DLTA (Fenesta Open) , giving the first glimpse of his potential. Setbacks including a back injury in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted progress. On the advice of former India player Somdev Devvarman, he moved to the United States on a scholarship, joining Wake Forest University. College tennis sharpened his mental toughness, match composure, and team competitiveness, preparing him for the pressures of elite competition.

That preparation bore fruit in India’s recent Davis Cup tie against the Netherlands in Bengaluru , where Dhakshineswar anchored the team with three match wins , including the decisive fifth rubber. He also partnered with Yuki Bhambri in doubles, contributing to India’s 3–2 victory and advancement in the Qualifiers.

Coaches praise his on-court composure, adaptability, and relentless work ethic , while off the court his organisation, systematic habits, and disciplined lifestyle stand out. “Everything is kept in the same place: racquet, cap, kit bag. Small things make the difference,” Chakravarthi said, calling him his finest pupil .

At home, pride is understated. Suresh Ekka summed up his emotions after the Netherlands tie: “What to say, no words.” Dhakshineswar’s quiet embrace with family mirrored a career built on routine, resilience, and belief sustained over years of unseen effort . With more international exposure and tournament play, his coach believes the top 100 in world rankings is within reach .

As India’s new Davis Cup hero , Dhakshineswar Suresh embodies the truth that breakthroughs are often forged not in noise, but in discipline, perseverance, and steady growth.
