White house targets Antifa as Trump approves military deployment to Portland

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of federal troops to Portland, Oregon, authorizing them to use “full force if necessary” against what he described as threats from Antifa and other “domestic terrorists.”

“At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect war-ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

The decision came after Trump signed an executive order designating Antifa as a “domestic terrorist organization.” The White House said the order empowers federal agencies to investigate the group’s “networks, financing, and any activity deemed to provide material support.”

Antifa, short for anti-fascist, is not a formal group but a loosely connected movement that stands against fascism, racism, white supremacy, and authoritarianism. It has no central leadership or organized structure and operates through local activists who participate in protests and counter-demonstrations against far-right groups.

However, the move has sparked backlash from local officials and residents. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek called the deployment “unjustified and politically motivated,” while Portland Mayor Keith Wilson insisted, “The number of necessary troops is zero.” Many locals expressed concern that military intervention could heighten tensions rather than bring peace.

Community leaders accused the administration of politicizing public safety and repeating the federal overreach seen during the 2020 protests, when unmarked federal agents clashed with demonstrators in Portland.

Legal and security experts criticized Trump’s use of the term “domestic terrorist”, noting that U.S. law does not allow designating domestic movements as terrorist organizations, and that “terrorism” lacks a precise, universally applied legal definition in the domestic context. They argue Trump is misusing the term for political effect, since Antifa represents an ideology, not an organized or armed entity.

Observers also note the historical irony the United States itself fought fascist regimes such as Hitler’s Germany during World War II, and labeling anti-fascist activism as terrorism undermines that legacy.

Analysts warn the phrase “full force” remains vague and undefined, raising fears of excessive use of power against civilians. Critics say the deployment fits a broader pattern of federal interventions in Democrat-led cities like Los Angeles and Washington D.C., intended to portray urban unrest as a national security crisis.

Despite Trump’s claims, crime rates in Portland have been declining, and local officials stress there is no imminent threat warranting military involvement. Residents continue calling for community dialogue and de-escalation, warning that militarization could deepen divisions and erode public trust.
