WhatsApp Expands Ads to Status and Channels While Protecting User Privacy

WhatsApp has begun expanding advertisements to more users, specifically in the Status updates and Channels sections of the app. Users have reported seeing ads while browsing these areas, though private chats, calls, and personal statuses remain end-to-end encrypted and are not used for ad targeting.

A popup notification has been displayed to some users informing them about the upcoming ads. According to WhatsApp, advertisements are now shown in the Updates tab, allowing users to discover new businesses and initiate conversations directly regarding products or services being promoted. The advertisements can be viewed, hidden, or reported, and additional information about advertisers is accessible through the app.

The ad targeting system has been designed to maintain privacy. Ads are displayed based on factors such as the user’s country or city, device language, followed Channels, content engagement, and previously clicked ads in Status or Channels. WhatsApp has emphasized that personal messages, call data, contacts, and group memberships are not used to personalize ads, and mobile numbers remain secure.

Users are provided with options to manage their ad preferences through Settings > Accounts Centre > Accounts Settings > Ad Preferences . Specific ads can be hidden by selecting the Sponsored button on a Channel or using More Options (three vertical dots) > Hide ad in Status.

The expansion of ads on WhatsApp is part of Meta’s ongoing effort to monetize its platforms, following similar approaches on Facebook and Instagram. The update aims to provide users with convenient access to local businesses and services, while maintaining privacy and control over ad interactions.

Benefits for users include: discovery of businesses, direct communication with advertisers, relevance of ads based on interests and location, easy ad control, exposure to local promotions, and privacy protection, as personal messages and calls are never used for ad targeting.

Overall, WhatsApp’s new advertising system is designed to enhance user experience by providing relevant information while ensuring personal data security .
