West Indies humbled as Nepal make history

Nepal created a landmark moment in their cricketing journey, stunning two-time world champions West Indies by 19 runs in the opening T20 International in Sharjah. The victory marked Nepal’s maiden triumph against a Full ICC Member, underscoring their growing stature in world cricket.

Put in to bat, Nepal posted 148 for 8 before their disciplined bowlers and sharp fielding restricted the West Indies to 129 for 9. The result was even more significant as it came in Nepal’s maiden bilateral series against a Full Member and their first T20I meeting with the Caribbean side.

Nepal’s innings, though wobbly at 12 for 2, was revived by captain Rohit Paudel (38) and Kushal Malla (30), who shared a crucial 58-run stand. Malla’s two sixes provided momentum, while Dipendra Singh Airee (24) and Gulsan Jha chipped in with handy contributions. Jason Holder struck thrice in the penultimate over, but sloppy catching by the West Indies let Nepal post a competitive total.

In reply, Kyle Mayers’ early run-out set the tone for the chase. Debutant Ackeem Auguste (15) showed promise with two sixes, but Nepal’s spinners, led by Lalit Rajbanshi and Paudel, tightened the screws. Airee’s brilliant run-out of Keacy Carty and Sundeep Jora’s sharp fielding further dented the visitors. With Holder and other middle-order batters falling cheaply, West Indies never recovered.
