Welfare on Wheels: Telangana Takes Anganwadi Services to Migrant Children

In a move aimed at expanding access to early childhood care and nutrition services, the Telangana government has launched Mobile Anganwadi Centres to serve children living in areas where conventional Anganwadi facilities are unavailable, with a special focus on the families of migrant workers.

Women and Child Welfare Minister Seethakka , along with Labour Minister Vivek , flagged off the first mobile Anganwadi vehicle at the MCR HRD Institute. Developed through the collaboration of the Women and Child Welfare and Labour Departments, the initiative will begin operations in Indiramma Colony of Medchal–Malkajgiri district , a locality with a significant migrant population.

Addressing the gathering, Seethakka said that children are the foundation of the state's future and will play a vital role in realizing the vision of Telangana-2047 . She noted that while regular Anganwadi centres provide a range of services, including nutritional support, healthcare, pre-school education, growth monitoring, and mother-and-child welfare programmes , many children remain outside the welfare net due to their location or the absence of nearby centres.

The minister highlighted that children of migrant labourers are among the most vulnerable groups, as frequent relocation often disrupts their access to essential services. Families moving to urban centres such as Hyderabad in search of employment frequently settle in temporary or underserved habitations, making it difficult for young children to benefit from government welfare programmes.

To address this challenge, the state has introduced specially equipped mobile units capable of delivering all services available at a standard Anganwadi centre. These vehicles will travel directly to migrant settlements and other underserved communities, ensuring that beneficiaries receive support closer to where they live and work.

According to Seethakka, each Mobile Anganwadi Centre has the capacity to provide services equivalent to nearly ten conventional centres and can benefit around 300 children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers . The initiative reflects the government's broader effort to make public services more accessible by taking them directly to communities rather than requiring people to travel long distances.

Describing a child's smile as the true measure of development, the minister said the mobile centres would serve as vehicles of social transformation, delivering nutrition, healthcare, and early learning opportunities to children who might otherwise be left behind. She added that the government led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is committed to ensuring the holistic development of every child , regardless of social or economic circumstances.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Telangana's child welfare network while addressing the unique challenges faced by migrant families in rapidly growing urban areas, helping ensure that no child is denied access to essential early childhood services.
