Weichai Launches Integrated Microgrid Solutions for Southeast Asia

Chinese powertrain and energy equipment manufacturer Weichai has launched its integrated microgrid energy solutions for Southeast Asia, aiming to address the region's rapidly growing electricity demand and support its transition to cleaner energy systems.

The announcement was made at the Shandong Heavy Industry Global Partners Conference and Green Smart Products Exhibition in Vietnam, where the company also showcased advanced technologies, including its solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems.

The launch comes as Southeast Asia emerges as one of the world's fastest-growing electricity markets, driven by industrialisation, digital infrastructure, and urbanisation. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the region's electricity demand is increasing by around 6% annually, nearly double the global average, while grid infrastructure and decarbonisation challenges continue to strain energy systems.

Weichai's integrated solution combines hybrid power stations, mobile photovoltaic systems, energy storage, integrated storage-charging units, SOFC technology, and diesel, gas, and heavy fuel oil generator sets into a unified platform. The company said the system is designed to provide reliable, deployable energy for industrial parks, islands, data centres, and remote mining operations, offering one-stop power services for diverse applications.

The launch reflects Weichai's broader strategy of evolving from an equipment manufacturer to a provider of end-to-end energy solutions. During the event, the company also signed agreements related to SOFC and other green energy projects, strengthening international cooperation in low-carbon technologies.

Alongside its renewable energy initiatives, Weichai continues to expand its conventional power generation portfolio through Baudouin, offering generator sets ranging from 1,250 kWe to 5,000 kWe, including the 20M61, which it describes as the world's first 5 MW high-speed diesel generator set.

Having supplied more than 160,000 engines in Vietnam over the past four decades, Weichai said it will leverage its expertise in conventional and clean energy technologies to support Southeast Asia's evolving energy infrastructure with reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable power solutions.
