Eva Green has officially joined the cast of Netflix’s hit gothic mystery series Wednesday for its third season. The acclaimed French actress will portray Aunt Ophelia, a troubled and long-missing member of the Addams family who was briefly glimpsed from behind during the final seconds of the Season 2 finale.

The casting marks the first major addition to the upcoming season, which was greenlit earlier this summer ahead of the Season 2 premiere. The reveal has finally ended months of fan speculation around the identity of the mysterious figure teased in the finale, including popular theories that linked the character to Rosalyn Rottwood, portrayed by Lady Gaga.

Aunt Ophelia is written as a powerful psychic, mirroring the supernatural abilities of her niece, Wednesday Addams. She is said to have pushed her psychic gifts far beyond safe limits, leading to her being committed to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital by her mother, Hester Frump. After escaping the institution, her trail went completely cold for years. In Season 2’s closing moments, Wednesday receives Ophelia’s personal journal from Morticia Addams as a symbolic act of trust and legacy. While reading it, Wednesday experiences a chilling vision of a blonde woman wearing a flower crown, a clear hint that Ophelia is alive and spiritually connected to her. This establishes Ophelia as a key figure in Wednesday’s evolving understanding of her own powers and the darker history of the Addams bloodline.

The series, created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and based on Charles Addams’ iconic characters, follows Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy, blending supernatural mystery with detective storytelling. The ensemble cast includes Jenna Ortega, Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Victor Dorobantu, Evie Templeton, Luis Guzman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joanna Lumley and Fred Armisen.

Eva Green’s addition brings significant prestige to the series. She rose to international fame with her theatrical breakthrough in Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers and quickly established herself as one of the most distinctive performers of her generation. She gained blockbuster recognition as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale , becoming one of the most memorable Bond girls in franchise history. She went on to star in visually stylised films such as Dark Shadows , 300: Rise of an Empire , Sin City: A Dame to Kill For , Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Dumbo . On television, she earned critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination for her haunting performance as Vanessa Ives in Penny Dreadful , a role widely considered among the strongest female performances in modern genre television. Her career has been defined by emotionally complex, gothic and psychologically intense characters, making her casting in Wednesday widely seen as a perfect creative fit.

The filming for Season 3 could begin around Spring 2026 in Ireland, as the writers’ room only opened in late 2025. If that timeline holds, the third season is expected to arrive sometime in mid-to-late 2027.

Season 1 of Wednesday remains Netflix’s most successful English-language series launch, amassing approximately 252 million global views within its first 91 days. Season 2 opened strongly, with its first batch of episodes gaining around 50 million views within five days, roughly comparable to Season 1’s initial momentum. However, total cumulative performance has softened, with Season 2 reaching roughly 102 million views, placing it at less than half of Season 1’s lifetime numbers. The decline has been widely attributed to the long gap between seasons and Netflix’s decision to split the second season into multiple release parts, which diluted its binge-watch impact.

Despite the softer performance, Netflix appears confident in the future of the series. With Eva Green stepping in as the enigmatic Aunt Ophelia and a deeper exploration of the Addams family’s darkest secrets promised, Wednesday Season 3 is being positioned as a creative reset aimed at restoring the gothic intensity and global momentum that defined its breakout first season.
