“We Will Secure the Karimnagar Mayor’s Post”: Minister Ponnam
Amid mounting anticipation over the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation mayoral election , State Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar made key remarks regarding the political scenario. He noted that although the BJP emerged as the largest party in the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation , it lacked a majority and opted to sit in opposition, an approach that, he said, would also apply to Karimnagar .
Speaking to the media in Vemulawada , Minister Ponnam Prabhakar explained that Karimnagar has a total of 66 corporators , and with the addition of votes from the MP and two MLAs (Karimnagar and Manakondur) , the total comes to 69 votes . Of these, the BJP has only 30 members . He questioned how, despite this, the mayoral post could be claimed as theirs. He added that every party has its own strategies in politics, and only those with a majority can assume governance is a fundamental democratic principle .
Recalling that his party previously secured only 13 seats yet managed to elect the mayor in Karimnagar , he said that political parties now operate according to state government directions . He clarified that neither the Chief Minister nor ministers interfere, and locally elected representatives make decisions based on their own deliberations.
Minister Ponnam extended greetings to the 30 BJP corporators as well as the remaining 36 members , urging all to elect the mayor democratically . He emphasised that a major city like Karimnagar , with three lakh voters , requires a capable administrative team for development. He asserted that urban development is more important than political gains and pledged to support the new governing body in his capacity as district minister. He also stated that they would not obstruct the majority party or attempt to remove anyone from office.
“Let’s see what happens today; the decision will emerge through democratic processes ,” Minister Ponnam Prabhakar concluded.
