Aamir Khan has dismissed the long-standing belief that the iconic character Rancho from the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots was inspired by Ladakh-based innovator Sonam Wangchuk , saying neither he nor the film's makers knew about Wangchuk while making the movie.

Speaking to journalist Nabanita Sircar , Khan said the entire cast and crew had never heard of Sonam Wangchuk during the production of the film , directly contradicting a recent statement made by his co-star Omi Vaidya , who had suggested that the character drew inspiration from the renowned education reformer.

The clarification comes as discussions around Wangchuk have intensified due to his ongoing 20-day hunger strike in New Delhi . The environmentalist and education innovator is demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister over the NEET-UG paper leak and stronger constitutional safeguards for Ladakh .

Wangchuk, widely known for pioneering solar-powered schools and the innovative Ice Stupa project to conserve water in high-altitude regions, has reportedly lost more than eight kilograms since beginning his fast. His health has steadily deteriorated, with doctors monitoring falling blood pressure and blood sugar levels , raising concerns over his condition.

The matter has also reached the courts, where the possibility of forced medical intervention is being considered if his health worsens further. Despite growing public attention and support from several groups, there has been no official response from the Central government to his demands so far.

For years, many movie enthusiasts believed Rancho's unconventional approach to education mirrored Wangchuk's real-life work, largely because of similarities in their philosophies. The assumption gained traction after the film's success and continued to circulate on social media and in public discussions.

However, Aamir Khan's latest remarks appear to settle the debate , making it clear that the makers of 3 Idiots did not know Sonam Wangchuk when the film was created, even though audiences may still see parallels between the fictional character and the celebrated innovator's vision for education.
