'We Can Beat Any Team If We Stick to Our Game Plan': India Hockey Coach Fulton
India's disappointing finish in the FIH Pro League may not tell the complete story of its campaign. While the team ended eighth with 19 points from 16 matches , its remarkable improvement in the latter stages has left head coach Craig Fulton confident that India can challenge any side in world hockey.
Fulton believes India's victories over reigning world champions Germany and Olympic champions Netherlands , along with a gritty performance against England , have reinforced the team's belief that it can compete with the very best. According to him, the key lies in sticking to the team's game plan and maintaining consistency throughout the match.
The campaign began on a difficult note, with defeats against Belgium and Argentina during the home leg in Rourkela exposing several weaknesses. However, the squad gradually found its rhythm during the Hobart leg, where it tightened its defence and produced determined performances against Spain and Australia , eventually securing a shootout victory over the hosts.
India's biggest transformation came during the European leg. The team produced two of its finest displays by defeating Germany 3-1 and the Netherlands 3-2 , while remaining unbeaten in regulation time against Pakistan and England in London. The defence looked more organised, the midfield controlled play effectively, and the forwards converted crucial chances.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh said the victories over top ranked teams reflected the hard work put in by every department. He added that the balance between defence, midfield and attack has boosted the squad's confidence ahead of the 2026 Hockey World Cup and the Asian Games .
Although there is still room for improvement, India's strong finish has restored belief that this squad has the potential to compete for major honours in the months ahead.
