West Bengal Governor and Chancellor of state-run universities C V Ananda Bose on Tuesday appointed new vice-chancellors to three public universities, according to a statement from Lok Bhavan. Arunasis Goswami has been named vice-chancellor of Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University , Debabrata Basu will lead Uttar Banga Krishi Vishwavidyalaya , and Debabrata Mitra has been appointed vice-chancellor of West Bengal State University .

A senior Lok Bhavan official said the appointments were made after due process to ensure academic governance and institutional stability , emphasizing the governor’s constitutional role as chancellor of the state universities. The appointments come amid a broader effort to fill leadership positions across the state’s higher education institutions, following past disagreements between the Raj Bhavan and the state government over university governance. Earlier this month, a consensus had been reached on vice-chancellor appointments for eight universities, including the three named on Tuesday, after prolonged delays in filling key positions.

The Supreme Court had directed the formation of a search-cum-selection committee, led by a former Chief Justice of India, to shortlist candidates and resolve differences between the governor and the state government. Officials involved in the current appointments said the latest decisions reflect due procedural steps and aim to strengthen academic leadership across West Bengal universities.
