Wave of hoax bomb threats raises security concerns across cities

A series of bomb threats reported across multiple cities has prompted heightened security measures and intensified investigations, with early findings suggesting that many incidents are linked to hoaxes and extortion attempts rather than coordinated terror activity.

In Bengaluru, a Defence Research facility under the Defence Research and Development Organisation received multiple emails warning of improvised explosive devices on its premises. The message, written in Tamil, also referenced an alleged plot to abduct the grandson of M. K. Stalin. Authorities evacuated and conducted a thorough search of the facility, but later declared the threat a hoax. A probe has been launched to trace the sender, with cyber forensic teams analysing email origins and server routes.

In a separate case in the national capital, police foiled a bomb threat targeting a coaching institute in northwest Delhi, arresting a 31-year-old man accused of orchestrating the scare as part of an extortion scheme. The accused allegedly posed as a gangster and demanded ₹21 lakh, threatening a blast if the money was not paid. Investigators tracked his digital footprint across states before apprehending him in Nashik, Maharashtra.

Preliminary investigations indicate that such threats often originate from individuals or small groups using fake identities, spoofed communications, and anonymisation tools to evade detection. Officials note that while some incidents may appear similar, there is no confirmed evidence yet of a single coordinated nationwide operation.

Security agencies remain on alert, particularly around sensitive installations and educational institutions, amid concerns over the disruptive impact of repeated hoax threats.
