Wave Of Coordinated Militant Attacks Shakes Mali, India Advises Nationals To Stay Indoors
Mali is witnessing one of the most intense waves of militant violence in recent years , with coordinated attacks reported across several cities including Bamako, Kati, Gao, Mopti and Kidal, raising serious concerns about the country’s deteriorating security situation.
Heavily armed militants launched simultaneous assaults on military bases and strategic installations , triggering explosions and gunfire in several areas. Witnesses reported clashes near key security facilities and around Bamako’s Modibo Keita International Airport , while security forces launched counter-operations to regain control. Authorities said the attacks were part of a complex and highly coordinated operation spanning hundreds of kilometres.
Responsibility for the assaults has been claimed by Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) , an al-Qaeda-linked militant group , which said it carried out the operation alongside the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) . Analysts say the cooperation between jihadist militants and separatist rebels marks a significant escalation in Mali’s decade-long conflict , which has destabilised the wider Sahel region. Reports also suggested that rebels may have taken control of Kidal and parts of northern Mali , though these claims remain unverified.
Against this backdrop, India advised its nationals in Mali to remain highly vigilant and exercise utmost caution . In an advisory, the Indian Embassy in Bamako urged citizens to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel and follow instructions issued by Malian authorities after attacks were reported in Kati and other areas.
According to official estimates, around 400 Indians live in Mali , forming a small but active diaspora primarily based in Bamako and a few other cities. Many are engaged in import-retail trade, mining, power, steel, cement, pharmaceuticals and agro-related industries , while some work with companies involved in infrastructure and development projects.
The embassy said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation and urged Indian nationals to stay connected through its official website and social media platforms. For emergency assistance, citizens can contact the mission at +223 78486019 and +223 94793705 .
