Waris Punjab De Member, US National Held at Indo-Nepal Border in UP

A wanted member of the pro-Khalistan outfit Waris Punjab De and a US national allegedly linked to the organisation were arrested while entering India from Nepal through the Indo-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district, police said on Thursday.

Waris Punjab De is a Punjab-based organisation that came into prominence under the leadership of Amritpal Singh, who was arrested in April 2023 under the National Security Act. The organisation has been associated with demands linked to Sikh identity and Punjab-related issues, while authorities have also investigated alleged extremist and separatist activities involving individuals linked to the group.

The arrests were made during a joint operation by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Uttar Pradesh Police near the Rupaidiha border post under the Rupaidiha police station area, Bahraich Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava said.

The accused were identified as Vikramjit Singh, who is wanted in connection with a case registered at Punjab's Ajnala police station in 2023, and Manveer Singh Dhillon, a US national and native of Moga district in Punjab. Police said the Punjab Police was looking for both men in separate cases.

According to preliminary questioning, Vikramjit had been absconding for several days, while Dhillon is suspected of having entered India through Nepal without a valid visa, allegedly to avoid scrutiny by law enforcement agencies. The duo was intercepted after crossing into Indian territory from Nepal.

Three Indian nationals Suresh Kumar Pathak, Dilip Upadhyay and vehicle driver Rahul Kumar were also arrested for allegedly facilitating the two men's entry into India, police said. Cases have been registered against the accused under relevant provisions at Rupaidiha police station.

Officials from various security and intelligence agencies deployed along the border questioned all five arrested persons as part of the investigation. Further investigation is underway to establish their movements, alleged links and the circumstances surrounding their entry into India.
