VP Radhakrishnan’s visit to Seychelles marks strengthening of India’s ties in the Indian Ocean

India’s Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan began his first overseas visit since taking office, travelling to Seychelles for a two-day official trip. While it may seem like a simple visit by a newly appointed leader to a neighbouring country, the trip carries far greater significance - reflecting India’s commitment to deepening partnerships in the strategically important Indian Ocean region.

During his visit, Vice President Radhakrishnan met Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Seychelles, where the two leaders discussed the strong historical and cultural ties between India and Mauritius. They also explored ways to further enhance India-Mauritius cooperation across various sectors.

In a post on social media platform X, the Vice President said the meeting underscored the “strong and enduring bonds rooted in shared history and culture” between the two nations.

Earlier in the day, the Vice President arrived in Seychelles to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Patrick Herminie and to address the Indian community in Victoria. His arrival was confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which said the visit would give “fresh momentum” to India-Seychelles ties.

The visit was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora in Seychelles. Members of the community expressed their excitement, calling it a moment of pride and a symbol of strong friendship between India and Seychelles.

Sunil, a member of the Indian diaspora, said, “This shows the strength of the relationship between the two countries.” Another member, Divya Pillay, added, “We are all excited upon his arrival. Their presence strengthens India-Seychelles ties and motivates the community.”

Seychelles, though a small island nation, holds great strategic importance for India due to its location in the Indian Ocean, a region vital for maritime security and regional cooperation. India has long partnered with Seychelles in areas such as security, climate resilience, and development.

As the Vice President’s first overseas engagement, this visit highlights India’s growing focus on stronger regional partnerships, especially with friendly island nations. Strengthening India’s relationship with Seychelles will not only reinforce mutual trust and cooperation but also contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indian Ocean region.
