Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Thursday added a touch of elegance and warmth to his maiden visit to the Kashmir Valley with a serene shikara ride on the iconic Dal Lake , a gesture widely seen as a symbolic push to boost tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The vice president, who arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday evening , was received at the airport by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and senior civil and police officials amid tight security arrangements . His visit coincides with the 21st convocation of Kashmir University , where he is scheduled to deliver the chief guest address later in the day.

As the early morning mist lifted over the vast freshwater expanse of Dal Lake, Radhakrishnan embarked on a tranquil cruise, soaking in panoramic views of snow-dusted peaks, floating gardens, and heritage houseboats. Sharing the experience on his personal X handle, he described the ride as a glimpse into Srinagar’s timeless charm, pristine waters , and breathtaking natural beauty .

Dal Lake, often called the jewel of Kashmir, is famed for its colourful shikaras, vibrant floating markets, historic houseboats, and scenic islands such as Char Chinar. The lake’s lotus blooms, bustling waterways, and lakeside promenades continue to captivate visitors, making it a focal point of the Valley’s tourism economy.

Radhakrishnan said he was deeply impressed by the sweeping transformation underway in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in infrastructure development and improved connectivity . He praised efforts to preserve natural heritage and create new livelihood opportunities for local communities, noting that these initiatives were revitalising tourism and strengthening economic resilience.

He said the changes reflected a new era of peace, progress, and prosperity, and expressed confidence that sustained development and sustainable tourism would further elevate Jammu and Kashmir’s stature as one of India’s most cherished travel destinations.
