A suspected case of food poisoning in Odisha’s Jajpur district has claimed one elderly woman’s life and left 58 people , including 27 children , hospitalised after consuming the popular snack ‘Cuttack Dahibara’ , officials said.

The incident occurred in Patapur village under Dasarathapur block on Friday morning, where residents purchased the dish from a roadside vendor between 8:30 am and 9:30 am . Soon after consumption, many began experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever , triggering panic in the village.

Family members rushed the victims to nearby healthcare facilities, and as several patients’ conditions worsened, over 50 people were shifted to the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital by ambulance for advanced treatment. Others were initially treated at the Dasarathapur Community Health Centre .

Officials said the affected include both children and adults, with some also receiving treatment within the village. While several patients have shown improvement and some have been discharged, the remaining are stable and under close medical supervision.

State Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling , along with local MP Rabindra Kumar Behera , visited the hospital, interacted with patients, and reviewed the situation with district authorities. Preliminary findings point to contaminated food, though confirmation awaits laboratory results.

Authorities have collected food and water samples for testing , and the Odisha government has formed three independent teams to probe the incident and identify lapses. Officials are also examining the hygiene practices of the vendor involved.
